For three decades, Women of Substance has been a cornerstone of up-town Damariscotta, offering clothing that celebrates natural beauty, eco-friendly fibers, and timeless confidence.
Founded in 1995 by Lynne Urquhart, the boutique has built its reputation on curating fashions made with care for women of all sizes — from mid-sized (medium) and grander.
This year, the store celebrates 30 years in business—a milestone that reflects both Urquhart’s vision and the loyal customers who have supported her along the way. From the beginning, Lynne wanted to create a place where women could find clothing that not only fit well, but also made them feel good inside and out.
To mark the anniversary, Women of Substance has introduced a new clothing line: Orientique. Known for its vibrant prints and versatile designs, Orientique brings together style and sustainability. The collection includes tops, sweaters, jackets, and pants crafted from 100% organic cotton and sustainable rayon sourced from FSC-certified forests. Beyond fashion, Orientique is deeply committed to ethical production, emphasizing fair trade practices and environmentally responsible materials.
“Orientique fits perfectly with our values,” said Urquhart. “Our customers care about looking good, but they also care about supporting companies that do good. This line allows them to have both.”
Local shoppers are noticing the difference. One mid-sized mom and professional recently left a glowing Google review after visiting Women of Substance for the first time:
“I can avoid the drive to the mall and find sustainably sourced foundation pieces locally! They have expanded their selection and styles to fit younger women with real bodies, who aren’t necessarily plus-sized, but aren’t served well by big box stores. I bought five high-quality pieces, which will mix with existing things in my closet to create a capsule wardrobe serving me well into winter.”
Her words echo what many longtime customers already know: Women of Substance is a rare find — and a place where women can shop locally, discover sustainable fashion, and leave feeling confident and cared for.
As the boutique looks toward the future, its mission remains unchanged: to provide fine fashions that honor both substance and style. Now under the management of Urquhart’s daughter-in-law, Annie Nixon, the store continues to carry forward its tradition of quality, eco-friendly fashions and attentive service. With its new offerings and a steadfast commitment to customers and community, Women of Substance is poised to serve Damariscotta and women from all over the country, for many years to come.
